Tasmania Continues Landclearing by Another Name, Work Halted on Giant Weld Valley Clearfell
"Activists have highlighted the
destructive impact of large scale cable logging on steep slopes in the
lower Weld Valley. Logging in pristine forest, tagged by Forestry
Tasmania as "WRO12C", was halted today with a tree sit erected on the
main access route," Huon Valley Environment Centre spokesperson Jenny
Weber said.
"Forestry Tasmania claims it has
ended landclearing, but these huge clear fells occurring in
leatherwood-rich ancient forest on steep slopes, are just landclearing
by another name," Jenny Weber said.
"Research shows that converting old
forests to young regrowth, managed on 80 year rotations leads to
massive carbon losses to the atmosphere. In this age of drought and
climate change, Australia's old growth forests are too precious to
plunder," Jenny Weber said.
