Forest Vigil held in Tasmania’s Southern Ancient Forests
“Community Forest Occupation
has been successfully halting logging operations, in the Denison
Valley, one of Tasmania’s southern forested
valleys. Adjacent to the Weld Valley,
where large wilderness areas are being destroyed by logging, people
have held a week long peaceful
vigil,” Huon Valley Environment Centre Spokesperson Jenny Weber said.
“New logging operations propose
to stretch destructive logging practices in remote wilderness forest
from the Denison to the Weld Valley’s. These
high conservation value forests border the Tasmanian World Heritage
Area and deserve immediate protection for endangered species
protection. This area is vital
habitat for the Little Denison Crayfish endemic to the Denison Valley
and Barnback region,” Jenny Weber said.
“State and Federal Governments
are paying lip service to the Wielangta Federal Court decision by
continuing to destroy sensitive ecosystems,
and this new logging in the Denison
Valley is potentially illegal. We are calling for immediate halt to
logging in contentious high conservation value forests,” Jenny
Weber said.
