MEDIA RELEASE

SWAG Activists Stage City Demonstration

Today, community activists from the Save the Weld Action Group (SWAG) will conduct an innovative action highlighting the continued destruction of Tasmania's native forests.

Activists will stage a "forced convict march" from Parliament to Forestry Tasmania's head office, symbolising Tasmania's eternal servitude to the industrial woodchipping industry.

"It is time to break the chains binding Tasmania to an unsustainable industry that is seriously damaging our natural environment and reputation," said spokesperson Warrick Jordan.

"Recent media reports indicate logging contractors are losing around $7 a tonne on delivered timber, while World Heritage valued forests like those of the Lower Weld Valley are still under threat. How is this industry delivering sustainable outcomes for Tasmania's future?" Mr Jordan said.

The action will leave from Parliament at 10am via Murray St and Elizabeth St, ending at Forestry Tasmania in Melville St at approximately 2pm.
