Weld Cup Final 2006
Symbolic Soccer Match in Tasmania

Eagles Vs Old Boys

As the planet counts down to the final of the World Cup in Germany another football final is being staged in Hobart today.

Spokesperson Ben Morrow said, "The Weld Cup Final will be a symbolic match to highlight the fact that while global attention is focused on the final of the 'world' game, world heritage forests in Tasmania continue to be detroyed at an extraordinary rate."

"With approximately 44 football fields of native forest being cleared every day, by the time Australia gets another chance at becoming football champions of the world it's threatened world heritage forests may be gone." Ben Morrow said.

The Weld Cup Final is being contested by the Old Boys Club and the Weld United Eagles.

Players for the Old Boys Club; John Gay, Paul Lennon, Evan Rolley, Eric Abetz, and Robyn Gray are representatives of industry and governments responsible for industrial forestry practices that are destroying unique values of Tasmania's World Heritage forests. On the bench is a sacked forestry family.

Playing for the Weld United Eagles are five Tasmanian forests of the Weld, Styx, Blue Tier, South Sister, Upper Florentine representing all Tasmania's World Heritage and high conservation value forests deserving of immediate protection. On the bench for the Eagles is the right to free speech.

With their chances boosted after a massive injection of Taxpayers
dollars from the Community Forest Agreement, the Old Boys Club looks set to claim victory. However, the Eagles will put up a atrong fight so future generations will be able to experience World Heritage and Wedge Tailed Eagles.
