Logging protester fined for trespassing
Wednesday, 28 March 2007.
A southern Tasmanian forestry protester has been warned he will go to jail if he continues to flout the law.
Warwick Jordan has pleaded guilty in the Hobart Magistrates Court to two counts of trespass.
The Franklin man was among a group of 70 protesters who went to the
Weld Valley in the state's south-west to take a stand against logging
practices last month.
He crossed the exclusion zone established by Forestry Tasmania and police on two consecutive days.
The court heard the 25-year-old was helping a group of protesters
negotiate with police after they chained themselves to equipment but he
had not obstructed any logging activities.
Magistrate Olivia McTaggart said while people had a right to express their opinion, they must do so within the law.
She said Jordan was not doing himself any favours by continuing to break the law and if he did not stop he would end up in jail.
Jordan was fined $250.
