Cable logging halted
Protesters in the Lower Weld Valley say they halted cable logging in
the region today, after a tree sit was erected on the main logging
access route.
The Huon Valley Environment Centre says the action was aimed at
highlighting what it calls the destructive impact of large-scale cable
logging on steep slopes in Tasmania's southern forests.
But Forestry Tasmania says contractors were able to continue work after a slight delay and there were no arrests.
Meanwhile, Forestry has congratulated protesters for abiding by their
commitment to allow contractors to complete road work in the Upper
Florentine today.
As a result of a Memorandum of Understanding signed by Camp Florentine
and Forestry Tasmania, work resumed on a road in the disputed area this
morning.
