Police remove Southwood development protesters

Police have removed protesters who were blocking the entrance to the site of the Southwood forestry project in southern Tasmania this morning.

The Huon Valley Environment Centre says it is protesting against a proposal for a wood-fired power station in the area.

The centre says plans for the station are awaiting approval from the renewable energy regulator, and claims old-growth forests would be used to fuel the station.

Protesters at the Southwood site were moved on by police this morning and one activist was arrested.

Environment centre spokesman Will Mooney says the fight to prevent the power station will continue.

"They're certainly in the area for the long-term and certainly their long-term goal is to stop this destructive development," he said.

American company National Power wants to build the the power station but no-one from its Sydney-based office has been available for comment.
