Police deny forest protest case closed
Monday, 4 December 2006.

Tasmania police have rejected claims they have prematurely closed an investigation into allegations that rocks and petrol bombs were thrown at forest protesters over the weekend.

Today police said they found no evidence to suggest that rocks were directed at campers in the Weld Valley, in southern Tasmania, or that petrol bombs were thrown.

But the Huon Valley Environment Centre says police refused to interview some witnesses, and ignored evidence of a petrol-covered beer bottle and an oil-soaked rag.

Inspector Mark Mewis has dismissed the centre's claims, saying police are yet to complete their investigation.

"An examination of the scene was conducted and witnesses were spoken to," he said.

"As I said, we are still speaking with witnesses today, so the investigation certainly isn't closed.

"We are taking the matter quite seriously and we are taking the matter to its conclusion."
