25.03.09 Tasmanian Tree-sit set up in new crisis zone
“Community activists have established a treetop protest this morning in threatened World Heritage Value forests in the Lower Weld Valley," Huon Valley Environment Centre’s Jenny Weber said.
"Logging is set to begin immediately in area of forest dubbed "Coupe WR015F", situated adjacent to the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area (TWWHA)," Jenny Weber said.
“Despite advice from the International Union for Conservation and Nature (IUCN) for an immediate moratorium on logging in high conservation value forests along world heritage boundary, environmentally irresponsible State and Federal Labor Governments have consigned this irreplaceable ecosystem to the woodchipper,” Jenny Weber said.
"Forestry Tasmania is determined to liquidate these world heritage value forests at the behest of the Australian and Tasmanian Government,” Jenny Weber said.
“Today, Forest Defenders have established a tree sit in a remote tall tree at high altitude, deep in the wilderness forest due for logging, to alert the world to the imminent logging that is set to commence,” Jenny Weber said.
“The Huon Valley Environment Centre has prepared an updated Crisis Report and will be writing to the World Heritage Centre and the World Conservation Union IUCN to alert them to the impending loss of these world heritage value forests,” Jenny Weber said.
