07.08.10 Peaceful Community Demonstration At Ta Ann Mill

Community members from the Huon Valley have joined Huon Valley
Environment Centre today in a peaceful demonstration at the Ta Ann
mill.

Thirty members attended the walk in, police and security guards were present.
Fifteen people entered the closed gates and staged a sit in at the mill.

“Members of the community will walk in to the Ta Ann mill holding
banners.  We aim to raise awareness of Ta Ann, a Malaysian company who
is using southern Tasmania’s high conservation value forests to make a
huge profit and who is unethical in it’s international deforestation
practices,” Huon Valley Environment Centre’s Jenny Weber said.

“The Lennon Labor Government welcomed Ta Ann in to our community
despite their appalling record of deforestation and destruction of
indigenous people’s lands in Sarawak.  Ta Ann is connected to a
government which has profited from the misery of indigenous peoples in
Sarawak. The destruction of Sarawak’s forests has gained international
attention for the displacement of indigenous peoples and human rights
abuses and the devastating impact on the Orang-Utang, pushing it’s
species into extinction,” Jenny Weber said.
