Nationwide Day of Action Targets ALP Forest Sell –Out
Forest Defenders in Launceston,
Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide, Newcastle and Perth
have participated in today’s Nationwide Day of Action targeting
the ALP’s sell out of Tasmania’s ancient forests. Actions
took place at the offices of Kevin Rudd, Peter Garrett, Kerry
O’Brien, Carmen Lawrence, Lindsay Tanner, Kate Lundy and the
South Australian ALP branch office.
“This Nationwide Day of Action
has demonstrated that the Australian communities’ concern for the
destruction of Tasmania’s ancient forests is as strong as ever.
Both major parties must realise that Australian’s care more about
their nation’s unique ecology than profits for corporate
mates,” said Huon Valley Environment Centre Spokeperson Jenny
Weber.
“Kevin Rudd and Peter Garrett
have comprehensively sold out Tasmania’s ancient forests. This
policy shows that Rudd’s climate rhetoric and Garrett’s
environmental credentials are wafer thin” Ms Weber said.
In Launceston, Canberra, Brisbane and
Perth, the peaceful office occupiers negotiated meetings with Labor
politicians, to voice their concerns with the ALP’s outrageous
sell-out of Tasmania’s old growth forests.
“Kerry O’Brien has made
it extremely clear that Labor will not be protecting any of
Tasmania’s threatened old growth forests” said Still Wild
Still Threatened campaign spokesperson Ula Majewski.
“Kevin Rudd and Peter Garrett
are pretending to take the critical issue of climate change seriously.
This is an absolute farce. Labor is authorising the industrial scale
devastation of some of Australia’s most significant carbon sinks.
Protecting Tasmania’s ancient forests is a simple and effective
climate change solution” said Ms Majewski.
