Tasmanian Activists highlight destruction in Far South Forest
In Southern Tasmania one activist is perched high in a treesit. Forest
campaigners have halted destructive logging in a hidden pocket of old
growth forest beneath Adamson's Peak, in Tasmania's Far South, high
lighting the incursion of logging into unprotected wild areas.
This morning fifteen activists halted logging in coupe EP031E, a 50
hectare "clump clearfell", situated in the Peak Rivulet area; a hidden
patch of spectacular tall old growth forests around 15 kilometers west
of Dover.
"Wild old growth forests along the fringes of the Tasmanian World
Heritage Area are being destroyed at an alarming rate. New roads and
logging are being pushed into hidden pockets of old growth, such as the
Peak Rivulet area," said Huon Valley Environment Centre Jenny Weber
said.
"Tasmania is facing the rapid loss of high quality old growth forest
landscapes, resulting in damage to threatened species habitat, carbon
storage, water quality and aesthetic values," Jenny Weber said.
"The Peak Rivulet area contains a patch of old growth forest beneath
the World Heritage area, Forestry Tasmania aims to log at least 15
