Tasmanian Activists protest old growth forest destruction in Far South

“This morning twelve activists are protesting in coupe EP031E, a 50 hectare "clump clear fell", situated in the Peak Rivulet area; where logging continues in a hidden patch of spectacular tall old growth forests around 15 kilometers west of Dover,” Jenny Weber said.

“Today forest activists have returned to old growth forest that is being logged in far south Tasmania, one activist is perched high in a tree sit. Logging in a hidden pocket of old growth forest beneath Adamson's Peak, in Tasmania's Far South, is another incursion of logging into unprotected wild areas,” Huon Valley Environment Centre’s Jenny Weber said.

“Federal Rudd Government has a commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the first six months of his term, ending deforestation in Tasmania’s high conservation value forests is a effective solution in preventing further climate change impacts that Tasmania’s forestry industry is having,” Jenny Weber said.

“Forest destruction in Tasmania’s wild and threatened southern forests is happening at an alarming rate, further encroaching along the fringes of the Tasmanian World Heritage Area,” Jenny Weber said.

“The Peak Rivulet area contains a patch of old growth forest beneath the World Heritage area, Forestry Tasmania aims to log at least 15 coupes close to the boundary. These are forests with Tall old growth stringy bark with big myrtles. Coupe 31E is also very close to the Adamson's Peak walking track. Logging will impact on view field from Adamson’s Peak,” Jenny Weber said.
